Shillong, May 6: Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) president Prof. D R L Nonglait has agreed to be the candidate of the NPP for the upcoming by-election to the Lok Sabha from Shillong seat.
In a letter to NPP president Conrad Sangma today, Prof. Nonglait said that he would abide by the principles and collective decision of the party.
It may be recalled that a delegation of the NPP led by working president Hamlet Dohling met Prof. Nonglait at his residence in Shillong recently and offered him party ticket to contest the by-election.
With this decision by Prof. Nonglait it is now clear that the NPP has got a candidate to take on VPP candidate Dr. Batskhem Myrboh. The Congress is likely to field former MP Vincent H. Pala.
Both Prof. Nonglait and Dr. Myrboh are teachers at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Prof. Nonglait teaches in the Khasi Department while Dr. Myrboh teaches in the Political Science Department.
Recently, Prof. Nonglait and a delegation of the KAS attended a meeting with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma after the State government announced Khasi and Garo as official languages in Meghalaya.
