Shillong, May 08: As the National People’s Party (NPP) has not yet taken any decision regarding a replacement for Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi as the representative to the Rajya Sabha, NPP National Vice President and Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday clarified that the party has not made any decision on who will be nominated as the next Rajya Sabha MP.
When asked about the growing demand from sections of the Garo community to nominate James K. Sangma as the Rajya Sabha representative, Dhar said there was nothing wrong with such suggestions, but reiterated that the party has not yet arrived at any decision.
“We have not taken any decision yet. Let the tenure of Dr. Kharlukhi come to an end first, and then the party will sit together and deliberate on the matter,” Dhar told reporters.
He further stated that Dr. Kharlukhi’s tenure is expected to end in June, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
On being asked whether the Rajya Sabha nomination should follow a regional balance between the Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills, Dhar said the party does not make decisions based on regional considerations.
“Any decision is taken collectively by the party after thorough discussion, because every decision has to be agreed upon by all,” he said.
He further added that the NPP is a party guided by its own principles, discipline, and values, and that any major decision is always taken with the consensus of all party leaders.
