Shillong, May 27: Only a single case has been registered by police against former Phulbari MLA, S G Esmatur Mominin in connection with the March 9 violence at Chibinang where the office of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and a statue were vandalised by a mob.

Informing this today, West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), Abraham T. Sangma said that the subsequent complaint lodged by Tura MDC, Bernard N. Marak regarding the incident is being treated as supplementary to the case that was already registered.

Sangma said that on March 18, 2026, a joint FIR was filed by leaders of GSU Chibinang and Phulbari regional units regarding vandalisation of the GSU office and a statue at Chibinang market.

He also said that based on the FIR, a case was registered at the Phulbari Police Station under various sections of the BNS and Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act.

“Accordingly, the accused persons have been arrested and investigation into the matter is presently underway,” he added.

The SP also stated that on April 14, 2026, he received a complaint letter from the Tura MDC regarding the same incident at Chibinang and the complaint letter was forwarded to the officer in charge of Phulbari Police Station.

“Since both the FIR and the complaint relate to the same occurence and set of facts, the complaint letter submitted by Bernard N. Marak has been treated as supplementary in connection with the already registered Phulbari PS Case No. 12/2036,” Sangma said.

He also cited the Supreme Court judgement in T T Antony vs State of Kerala &  Others (2001) where the top court ruled that multiple FIRs and multiple criminal cases cannot ordinarily registered in respect of the same incident or occurence.
