Kas Washes Off Hands From Nonglaits Decision To Contest Election

Shillong, May 28: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) today clarified that the decision of its president Dr. D Rockyer L. Nonglait to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election from Shillong seat “is purely his choice and the KAS has no connection whatsoever on the matter.”

In a statement issued to the media, KAS said that this clarification was needed as various news, discussions and comments in various media platforms, particularly on social media, “have adversely affected the credibility and integrity of the Society regarding the recent decision by the president to enter the electoral fray.”

“Since its inception, the KAS has included eminent politicians, scholars, technocrats, bureaucrats, and other distinguished personalities as its members. There has never been any restriction on individual members participating in politics or religious activities in their personal capacity. However, the Society as a collective body has always refrained from active involvement in political campaigns or religious affiliations and remains wholly dedicated to the growth and advancement of literature,” the KAS added.

It also said that Dr. Nonglait has formally informed the KAS of his decision to temporarily hand over his responsibilities to the vice president during the election process.

“The matter was placed before the General Council and was gracefully accepted during its meeting held today the 28th May, 2026,” the KAS statement said.
