Youth Who Assaulted Ex-Wife at Nongstoiñ By-Pass Arrested, Police Direct Removal of Video

Shillong, Jun 29: Nongstoiñ police have arrested a youth who severely assaulted his ex-wife, a video of which has gone viral on social media.

According to police, a video surfaced in the social media on June 28 whereby a 22-year-old woman was assaulted by a man on Nongstoiñ By-Pass. Police also said the incident occured on June 28 itself but was not reported.

With no FIR filed, a suo motu case was registered regarding the assault at the Nongstoiñ Police Station.

During the course of investigation and based on the information received from sources, police identified the accused as Fasdingson Wanñiang (23 years) of Mawkadiang village, West Khasi Hills, who is also the former husband of the victim.

“It is known that they have been living separately for more than one year and five months,” police said.

Other persons spotted in the video clip were interrogated and enquired where it was found that were key witnesses to the incident.

Police also informed that the woman went out with her friends where they later encountered with the accused person at the place of occurence who then started chasing and asaulting her.

The accused was apprehended by officers of Nongstoiñ Police Station with the help of Village Defence Party members of Mawkadiang village today morning. He was subsequently arrested and produced in court.

All assistance was provided to the assault victim and she had been sent to One Stop Centre, Nongstoiñ for counselling and other necessary assistance, police said.

Meanwhile, since the case was registered and investigation is in progress, police have asked all social media channels and individuals to stop circulating the content of the video related to the assault incident and to delete the video as it may hamper the investigation and reveal the identity of the victim.

Police also warned of stern legal action against those who are keeping or circulating the video.
