Nongpoh, June 30: Umiam Distillation Private Limited (UDPL) has strongly denied allegations that its ethanol manufacturing plant in Byrnihat is contributing to pollution in the area, maintaining that the facility operates in full compliance with environmental regulations and is equipped with modern pollution-control systems.
Responding to concerns raised on social media and in viral videos, UDPL General Manager Girjesh Joshi stated that the white plume visible from the plant is steam and not smoke or industrial emissions as alleged by some sections of the public.
According to Joshi, the visuals being circulated online present a selective and misleading picture of the situation and do not accurately reflect the plant’s operations or environmental performance.
He asserted that the company’s Byrnihat facility adheres to all prescribed environmental standards and continuously operates advanced pollution-control mechanisms designed to minimise emissions and environmental impact.
Joshi also called on the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to undertake a comprehensive scientific assessment of the entire Byrnihat Industrial Estate to identify the actual sources of pollution in the region, rather than attributing responsibility to any single industrial unit without detailed investigation.
He said such an exercise would help establish facts based on scientific evidence and provide greater clarity regarding environmental concerns in the industrial hub.
Reaffirming the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, Joshi stated that UDPL remains fully committed to complying with all statutory requirements and will continue to cooperate with regulatory authorities in ensuring environmental protection and sustainable industrial operations.
The statement comes amid heightened public scrutiny over air quality and pollution levels in Byrnihat, an industrial area that has been under increased monitoring by environmental authorities in recent years.I can also provide headline options and an Instagram version if needed.
