Supreme Court To Hear Meghalaya Govt Plea Against Sonam’s Bail

Shillong, Jul 2: The Meghalaya government today moved the Supreme Court challenging the June  29 order of the Meghalaya High Court that upheld the bail granted to murder accused Sonam Raghuvanshi by the court of Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) in April 2026.

The appeal was made by the Meghalaya government through Solicitor General Tushar Mehta before the bench of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu.

Arguing before the top court’s bench, Mehta said the Meghalaya High Court had erred in upholding the bail. He also said that there is a possibility of Sonam absconding if she continues to remain on bail.

On his pleading, the Supreme Court bench agreed to list the matter for hearing tomorrow (July 3).

Sonam is the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon trip to Nongriat near Sohra in May 2025. Raja’s body was found from a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong in Sohra on June 2 after intensive search by police and volunteers.
