Shillong, Aug 8: While common residents especially women of Riat Laban and adjoining areas have voiced serious concern about the massive cutting of matured trees at the Shillong Peak Forest for the tourist ropeway project, headmen of Raid Laban area expressed strong support to the project.
The Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun today said the tourist cable car would boost tourism in the area.
Speaking to media persons after a joint inspection at the project site, Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun president Ïosterson Sun said the headmen’s body has no objection to the project and urged the State government to fast-track the project.
“Actually, this is a project proposed and executed by the Tourism Department, Government of Meghalaya. We, as Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun, are the owners and we look after the Shillong View Point,” Sun said.
“From our side, we do not have any objection. We support the project,” he added.

Stating that the Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun had discussion with with the Tourism Department four years ago about the ropeway project and also held discussions with the local residents on the issue, Sun said, “We are happy with the coming of this project because after its completion, tourists will go by ropeway to visit the Shillong View Point.”
