Shillong, Aug 18: Former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang passed away today after a two-year bout with cancer. She was 64.
A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Suchiang was the first Khasi woman to hold the post of Chief Secretary which she served from September 30, 2021 to December 31, 2022.
After her retirement from service, Suchiang was appointed as Director General of Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI).
In April 2025, she was appointed as Chief Information Commissioner and held the post till her last breath.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in his condolence message praised Suchiang for her bold decisions during her tenure as a bureaucrat and said her service and dedication to the State will be remembered.
