Mukul Flags Possibility Of Return Of Garo Insurgency

Shillong, Sep 3: The recent Songsak shootout in which four inter-state criminals were killed by police is an indication of attempts to revive insurgency in Garo Hills.

This was stated by Meghalaya’s Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma to media persons today.

According to him, inputs available with intelligence agencies suggested “a larger pattern that goes beyond the incident”.

“What you see is only the tip of the iceberg,” Sangma said, adding that he had flagged the issue in the State Legislative Assembly several times.

“I have shared on the floor of the House how forces are trying to come together to raise a militant outfit,” he said.

Stating that reports of movement of individuals with sophisticated weapons in Garo Hills is a matter of concern, Sangma said that the factors that allowed such groups to recruit vulnerable youth should be seriously examined.

“There is no place for complacency,” Sangma said while pointing out that insurgent groups from Garo Hills operate across a larger corridor which also includes areas of West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
