Rymbui, Olan, Balajied Attend UDP Meet, 5 Other Possible Defectors Absent

Shillong, Sep 11: Three UDP MLAs whose name figured in the list of eight party legislators who are likely to join the BJP soon attended the central executive committee meeting of the UDP held at the party office in Shillong today.

Cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Olan Sing Suin and Balajied Synrem attended the UDP meeting whereas five other possible defectors skipped the meeting.

Rymbui, Suin, Synrem and five other UDP MLAs recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders in New Delhi.

According to sources, Rymbui,Suin and Synrem told the meeting that they  along with five other UDP MLAs met Shah and other BJP leaders recently to raise issues of the State.

However, Suin was candid when he told media persons that the defection to the BJP may happen if the Central government agrees to the issues raised by the eight UDP legislators.

“Anything may happen soon. There is no problem in joining BJP if the Central government agrees to our demands,” he said.

It may be noted that only five of the twelve UDP MLAs attended the CEC meeting of the party.

This has given clearer indication that the UDP is facing an internal crisis which may result in the party losing a large chunk of its MLAs to the BJP.

The fact that UDP working president and sitting MLA Paul Lyngdoh  was also absent from the meeting has added another proof that a serious crisis is brewing in the party.

Of the five UDP MLAs who attended today’s meeting only two of them which included party president Metbah Lyngdoh were present when the party flag was hoisted to commemorate the foundation day of the party.

Despite the absence of seven MLAs from the CEC meeting, UDP general secretary Titos Chyne however tried to put up a brave face by saying that no party MLA is going to leave the party.

“Just because some of our MLAs flew to Delhi or Kolkatta or met Amit Shah, it does not mean they are going to join the BJP,” Chyne said.

Meanwhile, senior BJP MLA from Meghalaya, Alexander L. Hek today met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the prevailing political situation in Meghalaya including the reported move by eight UDP legislators to join the BJP.
