Nongstoin, September 25: Strongly opposing a claim made by a news channel from Assam that as many as 95% of people living in the Langpih border area want to join Assam, residents and village leaders of the Umthli area on Thursday organised a public meeting to reject what they described as a baseless claim.
The meeting was held at Umthli and attended by residents from several border villages, including Mawdiangkob, Taimara, Umdiangshiar, Umdiangphiang, Umthli, Umkhamdol, Daiphang, Umbah, Ukiam, Borkhuli, Hasem, Warigro, Doledonga and others.
The gathering was also attended by leaders of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Rimuliang Circle, members of the Executive Dorbar of Hima Nongmynsaw Syiemship and other village leaders, who expressed solidarity with the residents.

The residents, FKJGP leaders and representatives of Hima Nongmynsaw Syiemship strongly rejected the claim that 95% of the people want to join Assam. They asserted that the claim does not reflect the wishes of the people and said that the residents want to remain in Meghalaya, particularly if the boundary demarcation process is properly resolved.

They further urged the governments of Meghalaya and Assam not to delay the boundary settlement process and said the administration of the border areas should be entrusted to Meghalaya in accordance with the aspirations of the people living in the region.
