BJP Leaders Visit Meghalaya to Strengthen Party Following UDP MLAs’ Defection

Shillong, October 9: Following the joining of eight UDP MLAs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the BJP party’s Meghalaya in-charge leaders have arrived in the state to focus on strengthening the organisation and expanding its activities across Meghalaya.

The visiting leaders include Kanad Purkayastha, Rajya Sabha MP from the Barak Valley, and Dr Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. They held a meeting with BJP representatives in Meghalaya.

Speaking to the media, Purkayastha said their visit aimed to strengthen the party and familiarise the people of Meghalaya with the development initiatives implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the BJP wanted to expand its presence among all sections of society across Meghalaya, reaching people in the hills, valleys and remote areas to ensure that the state benefits from development opportunities available to other states without discrimination.

“If all other states are getting these opportunities, Meghalaya should also receive the same opportunities,” Purkayastha said.

He added that their meeting with the newly joined BJP MLAs focused on expanding the party’s organisational base, strengthening its functioning and exploring ways to bring the party closer to the people.
