Shillong, October 26: Former Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya and former National People’s Party (NPP) Meghalaya president, Dr. WR Kharlukhi, on Monday announced his decision to support the Congress party and its candidate, Vincent H. Pala, in the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election for the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Kharlukhi said that after leaving the NPP, many people had asked him about his next political move.

He said he had now decided to support the Congress and Pala in the by-election to the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.

Explaining the reasons behind his decision, Dr. Kharlukhi said one of the key factors was his opposition to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, 2026 (FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026), in its present form.

He said the provisions of the Bill, particularly Amendment No. 16, had raised serious concerns for him, adding that he could not accept the legislation in its current form.

Dr. Kharlukhi further expressed concern over the future of minorities, stating that even after 79 years of India’s independence, the Bill had made him apprehensive about their future.
