Shillong, Oct 31: After one year of being a minister, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh today stepped down from the Meghalaya cabinet citing the “prevailing scenario” in his party.
Lyngdoh who held the portfolios of Power, Textiles, Water Resources and Taxation in the State cabinet has submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
“Due to the prevailing situation in the party after the exit of eleven party MLAs from the party, I feel it is appropriate for me to step down from the cabinet,” Lyngdoh said.
The resignation of Lyngdoh today came amid speculations that a cabinet reshuffle is on the cards.
There are reports that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma may induct new ministers in the next reshuffle that is likely to take place next week.
Lyngdoh, a four-time MLA from Mairang Constituency was inducted as minister in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) cabinet on September 16, 2025.
The UDP which was a major alliance in the MDA with twelve MLAs suffered a major setback recently with the exit of eight legislators who later joined the BJP increasing its number to ten MLAs.
Shortly after, three more MLAs left the party and joined the NPP. This raised the number of NPP legislators to 36.
The political equation that suddenly changed left UDP with only Lyngdoh as the lone MLA of the party in the House of 60 members.
The reduction of UDP’s strength meant that few MLAs from the BJP and NPP are waiting to be inducted into the cabinet and Lyngdoh’s resignation has paved way for the process.
