SHILLONG, NOV 2: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday evening said the state government would have to follow legal procedures in response to the KHADC’s move to oppose the Shillong Ropeway Project by locking the Lower Terminal Site through its representatives, despite the project having been underway for around two-and-a-half years.

Speaking to reporters, Conrad questioned why the opposition had not been raised earlier through proper discussions or dialogue, instead of resorting to locking the project site without any prior consultation.

“The state government will have to follow the due process of law, and those involved will have to take responsibility for their actions in locking the Lower Terminal Site of the Shillong Ropeway Project,” Conrad said.

He termed the KHADC’s action unacceptable, pointing out that various agencies had already been involved in implementing the project and that the Commissioner Secretary, Industries, Tourism and MTDC departments had clarified matters concerning it.

He expressed surprise that the KHADC had opposed the project without any discussion or consultation.

Reacting to the opposition, Conrad said the move would result in a major loss of opportunities for the state’s youth, as the project was aimed at promoting tourism and generating employment for young people in Meghalaya.
