SHILLONG, NOV 6: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Shillong Ropeway Project has stated that it has no intention of approaching the Meghalaya High Court to challenge the state government’s decision to proceed with the project.

JAC member Venetia Mawlong made this clear when asked whether the committee would move the High Court against the government’s decision to continue the project.

Speaking to reporters, Mawlong said, “There is no point in doing so. As of now, we have neither the intention nor the plan to approach the honourable court. If we take that step, our movement will come to an end. Ultimately, who will continue fighting for us? The struggle must be fought collectively by people from both sides.”

She further said that the committee had no such plans and believed there was no need to approach the court, adding that they would continue the fight on their own for as long as they could.

Mawlong also clarified that Friday’s street protest by JAC and GTF leaders was not the beginning of their agitation but an effort to remind the public that they had remained committed to opposing the Shillong Ropeway Project since the very beginning.

She further expressed concern over Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh’s remarks, questioning his statement that there was no need to cry or shout.

“I want to clarify, especially to Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, how can he say that there is no need to cry or shout? Does he understand the personal experiences of us women? He should not make personal attacks against us,” she said.
