NEHU’s non-teaching staff hail decision to replace Shukla

Shillong, Jun 1: Non-teaching employees of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have welcomed the decision by the Ministry of Education to appoint a new vice chancellor of the university.

It may be noted that the Ministry of Education has recently floated an advertisement calling for eligible candidates to apply for the post of vice chancellor in NEHU to replace incumbent Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.

In a letter to the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the NEHU Non-teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) said the move to replace Prof. Shukla was expected much earlier given the ongoing crisis in the university due to his incompetence.

“Prof. Shukla voluntarily chose to abandon the university headquarters in Shillong and at the same time trying his level best to interfere remotely from a distant location in the academic and administrative sector of the university,” NEHUNSA said.

Expressing full faith that the Ministry of Education would henceforth appoint a vice chancellor who is well qualified both in the academic and administrative background, the association requested that the appointment should be  completed before August 2026 “to avoid any leadership vacuum.”

NEHUNSA also stated that the Acts and Statutes of NEHU should be honoured so that on the expiry of the term of Prof. Shukla, the senior-most professor should take charge as the acting vice chancellor.

“Any attempt to extend the term of Prof. Shukla shall prove to be detrimental to the overall health of the university,” it added.
