Khliehriat, May 22: The proposed Public Hearing of Shree Cement Limited in East Jaintia Hills for its limestone mining project at Lum Syrman triggered tension and unrest, affecting the law and order situation in the area, as a truck was allegedly set on fire before the commencement of the Public Hearing today.
It may be recalled that the proposal by Shree Cement Limited to establish a cement plant and undertake limestone mining at Lum Syrman has sparked controversy, with two groups emerging over the issue — one supporting the project and the other opposing it.
Although the district administration and the police department had made adequate security arrangements for the Public Hearing today, protests still erupted, and it was alleged that a truck was set ablaze, reportedly by a group opposing the Shree Cement project.
It was also witnessed that due to the strong opposition against the Public Hearing of Shree Cement Limited scheduled for today, tensions escalated beyond the vehicle-burning incident, as protestors strongly objected to the event and prevented the authorities from conducting the Public Hearing, ultimately leading to its cancellation today.
