Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in for a second term as the Chief Minister of Assam on Monday during a ceremony held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from various states, and senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya formally appointed Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam after he was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly following the recently announced election results. The BJP alone won 82 seats, marking the first time the party has secured an absolute majority on its own in the state Assembly.
The alliance government will continue with the support of its coalition partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), both of which won 10 seats each.
Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony also led to severe traffic congestion in the Khanapara area, where vehicular movement remained heavily affected for several hours on both sides of the National Highway.
