Conrad Denounces Killing Of Pastors In Manipur

Shillong, May 13: The killing of three Baptist Church pastors belonging to the Kuki tribe in Manipur has been strongly condemned by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who also demanded proper investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued today, Sangma said the attack was “deeply disturbing and utterly unacceptable in any civilised society.”

Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Kuki Baptist community, Sangma said the killing was a “grave assault on the values of harmony, compassion, and coexistence.”

Sangma also urged the Centre and Manipur government to investigate the matter and ensure justice to the victims. He also called for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities “particularly in conflict-affected areas”.

He also reiterated the need for dialogue, reconciliation and collective efforts for restoration of peace and mutual trust in Manipur.

The three pastors of the Thadou Baptist Association who were gunned down by miscreants were identified as V Silthou, V Kaigoulun and Paogoulen. Silthou is the former Secretary of Manipur Baptist Convention.

The killing that occured at Kangpokpi in Manipur comes amidst heightened tension between Kukis and Thangkhul Nagas with including retributory attacks between the two sides recently.
