Shillong, May 22: The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026 was celebrated today at the Moreau Institute of Integral Training (MIIT), Shillong, under the global theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact.”
MBK Reddy, Principal Secretary, Forest and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Observed globally on May 22 every year, the International Day for Biological Diversity aims to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity and the urgent need for its conservation. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations to promote understanding and appreciation of biodiversity issues worldwide. Since the establishment of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board (MBB) in 2012, the State has been commemorating IDB annually at both the State and District levels.
This year’s theme underscores the importance of local action and community-led initiatives in addressing global biodiversity challenges, emphasizing that meaningful conservation outcomes begin at the grassroots level.
On the occasion, the Chief Guest, along with other dignitaries, released a poster on “Timber Trees of Meghalaya,” a booklet on “Commercial Seasonal Fruits of Meghalaya,” and the Annual Report of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board. Prizes were also distributed to winners of various competitions organised as part of the celebrations.

The State Level Biodiversity Award 2026 was also presented to recognise exemplary efforts in biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of bioresources in Meghalaya. Under the category of “Best Biodiversity Management Committee,” the awards were conferred on Pormawlai BMC from Shallang Block, West Khasi Hills District, and Selbalgre BMC from Rongram Block, West Garo Hills District, in recognition of their significant contributions towards the conservation and sustainable use of local bioresources.
In addition, Special Awards of Appreciation were presented to selected Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) for their dedicated efforts towards the conservation of the Clouded Leopard in non-protected areas of Meghalaya. The recognition highlights the important role of local communities in protecting wildlife habitats and promoting community-based conservation initiatives outside protected areas.
A Special Award of Appreciation was also presented to four NGOs/organisations, namely NESFAS, NEICORD, MIMDI, and IYBN Meghalaya Chapter, for their unwavering contribution towards biodiversity conservation in the State.
The awards highlight the vital role played by Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in safeguarding Meghalaya’s rich ecological heritage through community-driven conservation initiatives.
