Shillong, May 13: Villagers from Lapangap in West Jaiñtia Hills have decided to resume cultivation of rice at their fields close to the border with Assam from tomorrow.

The decision was taken today following a meeting between Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and representatives of the villagers held at the State secretariat in Shillong today.

The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Shakil Ahmed and other senior officials.

West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa were also present.

At the meeting, Dhar assured that police personnel from Special Force-10 would be deployed to Lapangap to guard the villagers during their cultivation.

The government also said that the peace committee set up to restore normalcy and comprising headmen and elders from Lapangap and leaders from the Karbi community of Assam would continue its work to ensure that peace returns to the area.
