Guwahati || Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the Assam government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming Assembly session scheduled to begin on May 25.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said the move was part of the BJP’s election manifesto commitment and was approved during the government’s first Cabinet meeting after returning to power.

“We committed in the BJP’s election manifesto that we will implement UCC in Assam. So we decided in the very first Cabinet that on 25 May, when our Assembly session begins, we will present the UCC bill in front of the House,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister also announced several measures in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide appeal aimed at promoting austerity and reducing unnecessary expenditure.

According to Sarma, convoys of Governors, Chief Ministers, and Ministers in Assam will be downsized, while the state government will avoid purchasing new vehicles for the next six months and encourage vehicle scrapping.

He further stated that the Assam government will not procure foreign-made products for the next six months. Government employees will also be restricted from foreign travel, except in cases related to medical treatment.

Sarma said the state government would implement the Prime Minister’s appeal “humbly” and focus on promoting responsible governance and economic discipline.
