Mukul Demands Action Against Contractor For Illegal Digging Of Boulders

Shillong, May 15: Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma has drawn the attention of the district administration of East Garo Hills on the ongoing illegal digging of stones and boulders by the contractor engaged for widening of the Darugre-Songsak-Williamnagar section of National Highway-127B.

Dr. Sangma who is also the MLA of Songsak Constituency in a letter to East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC) R P Marak today alleged that the contractor has “deviated from the scope of work permissible under the original detailed project report and resorted to illegal, unscientific extraction of stones/boulders from the under-surface of the land along the alignment of the road.”

Stating that the extraction of stones and boulders was not accidental, Dr. Sangma said the action by the contractor is pre-determined and intentional and in violation of the MMDR Act, 1957.

He also stated that the contractor carelessly dumped the debris and huge mounds of extra earth causing serious impact on the environment .

Further, Dr. Sangma alleged that overloading by the trucks and dumpers belonging to the contractor  has damaged the Songsak-Mendi road which has a weak timber bridge.

“The instant case requires immediate action as per law to prevent continuation of illegalities,” Dr. Sangma said in the letter while also asking the DC to inform him about the action taken on the matter.
