Khliehriat, May 18: Leaders and members of the Jaintia National Council (JNC) and the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) from the Jaintia Hills, along with members of the public, marched towards the Secretariat today to strongly protest against the proposed Public Hearing of Shree Cement Limited scheduled to be held on May 22, which plans to set up a cement plant and undertake limestone mining at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills.

It may be recalled that residents of Daitstong, along with various organisations and village bodies, had earlier opposed the Public Hearing of Shree Cement Limited. However, alleging that the voices of the people were being ignored, the two organisations decided to march to the Secretariat today demanding the cancellation of the Public Hearing scheduled on the announced date.

During the march, the leaders and members of the organisations, accompanied by members of the public, proceeded towards the Secretariat but were stopped by Shillong police personnel.

The protesters also raised slogans condemning the government and the authorities concerned for allegedly failing to heed the concerns and voices of the people. Meanwhile, the police prevented the demonstrators from advancing further towards the Secretariat.

At the time of filing this report, there was no information on what action the government authorities would take regarding the organisations and the protesters who marched to the Secretariat. The protesters, however, continued their agitation demanding the cancellation of the proposed Public Hearing.
