VPP to Wait for High Court Verdict for NEHU Clearance to Myrboh

Shillong, Jun 26: With the Lok Sabha by-election from Shillong seat likely to be held in November, the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) is awaiting the verdict of the Meghalaya High Court on the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for its candidate Batskhem Myrboh.

Myrboh who teaches in the Political Science Department of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) had moved the High Court after the university authorities failed to grant him the NOC to contest the Lok Sabha by-election.

Speaking to media persons, VPP leader and Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbañiang said that the party would wait for the ruling of the High Court on the matter.

“The matter is with the honourable Meghalaya High Court at present. I believe in the coming days, the court will give its verdict and we will wait for the order,” Marbañiang said.

Citing the norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Marbañiang argued that there is no reason for NEHU to decline issuing the clearance to Myrboh.

“In fact, if you go by the UGC regulation, if you have completed three years of service in the university and if your service has been confirrmed, the university should issue the NOC,” he said.

According to him, if there is anything adverse against a teacher, NEHU should have informed such teacher.

“Since election is expected in November, we cannot sit idle, we have to go to the field,” Marbañiang said.

The Lok Sabha seat from Shillong parliamentary constituency fell vacant after the demise of sitting MP Ricky A J Syngkon in February this year. Syngkon belonged to the VPP.
