USTM Celebrates National Doctor’s Day; Dr Sarbeswar Sahariah Says Public Trust Is the True Measure of Medical Excellence

Nongpoh, July 1: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), in collaboration with PA Sangma International Medical College & Hospital (PIMC) and IA Ayurvedic Medical College (IAMC), on Wednesday celebrated National Doctor’s Day 2026 with a special programme highlighting the dedication and contributions of medical professionals to society.

The event was organised under the theme “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?” and brought together senior doctors, academicians, healthcare professionals and university officials.

Among those present were USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, Vice Chancellor Prof. G.D. Sharma, Padma Shri Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariah, Pro Vice Chancellor of USTM, Prof. (Dr.) A.C. Kataki, Director of Medical Administration, Dr. Jogesh Sharma, Director of Medical Education and Research at PIMC, Prof. (Dr.) H.K. Sharma, Principal of PIMC, and Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma, Senior Professor of IAMC.

The programme began with the felicitation of senior doctors and professors in recognition of their contributions to medical education, healthcare services and institutional development.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) A.C. Kataki highlighted the evolving role of doctors in today’s complex healthcare landscape and stressed the need to balance clinical excellence with compassion and patient-centred care.

A special segment of the programme honoured the founding doctors of PA Sangma International Medical College & Hospital for their role in establishing the institution and shaping its academic and healthcare vision. The occasion also saw the presentation of the “Doctors of the Year – 2026” awards to medical professionals recognised for excellence in patient care, academic achievements, professional ethics and service to society.

Delivering the keynote address, Padma Shri Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariah said that true medical excellence is measured not only by professional expertise but also by the trust and confidence doctors earn from the people they serve.

He emphasised that empathy, integrity and humanity remain the cornerstones of the medical profession and urged healthcare practitioners to continue prioritising compassionate care.

Dr. Sahariah also reaffirmed USTM’s commitment to strengthening healthcare education and infrastructure in the region, including the development of upcoming super-speciality healthcare facilities aimed at expanding access to quality medical services.

As part of the celebration, Premium Health Cards were distributed to members of the media fraternity. The initiative will enable journalists to avail concessions on medical consultations, treatments, diagnostic services and medicines at PA Sangma International Medical College & Hospital.

The programme concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to uphold the values of the medical profession and continue serving society with dedication, compassion and excellence.

Established in 2011, USTM is the first state private university in science and technology in Northeast India and is accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. The university continues to focus on education, research, innovation, healthcare and community development across the region.
