Shillong, Jul 11: The continuous monsoon rain in the past few days has caused damage to houses and crops besides damage to roads in various parts of Garo Hills region.
According to reports, on July 9, landslide occured at a place under Zikzak C&RD Block where one village and six people were affected. A house was also damaged. One road in the area was partially blocked by the landslide.
On the same day, flood occurred at Mahendraganj under the same Block and six villages were affected. One bridge was damaged. Officials are assessing if any damage was caused to houses and crops in the area.
There were also reports of erosion of the approach road to the Mineng bailey bridge near Gasuapara in South Garo Hills. Traffic has been restricted to light vehicles and an alternative route is being used by local villagers.
Reports were also received of a landslide adjoining a structure in the Mairang area of Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid landslide prone stretches and flooded streams.
The people were also urged to postpone non-essential travel on hill roads during periods of heavy rain. Caution has also been advised on lightning possibility during thunderstorm.
