Shillong, Jul 26: Sawanka Surong from Meghalaya was among the 52 contestants from various parts of India who have reached the decisive stage of the prestigious Miss Universe India 2026 pageant now underway in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
26-year-old Surong who hails from Shillong got entry into the national competition after winning the Miss Universe Meghalaya earlier this year.
Yesterday, Surong and 51 other contestants took part in one of the key highlights of the contest – the Gala Round and Introduction and Welcome Ceremony.
The Gala Round is considered one of the most significant segments of the contest, where all finalists appeared in elegant gowns and designer ensembles.
During the stage, contestants are assessed on various parameters, including personality, confidence, stage presence, etiquette, communication skills and overall fashion sensibility.

Although Gala Round is not an elimination round, participants are evaluated and scored on specific judging criteria, making it an important milestone in the overall competition.
The competition will continue with several assessment rounds before culminating in the grand finale scheduled to be held on August 23 in Jaipur. The winner will earn the honour of representing India at the Miss Universe contest at the international stage.
Miss Universe India has previously produced global icons such as Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu who have brought immense pride to India at the international stage.
