Shillong, July 26: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday morning recovered the body of a missing person from the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer, Mylliem, bringing a four-day search and rescue operation to an end.
According to officials, the body was recovered at approximately 7:10 a.m. on July 26, 2026.
The search operation was launched on July 22 after reports were received that a resident of Phra Mer had gone missing. The SDRF, in coordination with Mawngap Police and with the assistance of residents from Laitkroh and Phra Mer, carried out an extensive search of the river, surrounding gorges, and riverbanks.
A Rubber Inflatable Boat (RIB) was deployed to search the stretch of the Wahniangleng River from the Mawphlang Dam downstream, while additional search operations on July 23 and 24 covered both upstream and downstream sections. Despite sustained efforts, no trace of the missing person was found during the initial days of the operation.
A breakthrough came on July 25 when local residents spotted the body lodged in a narrow and difficult-to-access section of the river. Although SDRF personnel attempted an immediate recovery, the operation had to be suspended due to strong water currents and hazardous conditions.

The rescue team resumed the operation at first light on Sunday and successfully recovered the body, which was subsequently handed over to Mawngap Police for the completion of legal formalities.
The Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards stated that the successful recovery was the result of close coordination between the SDRF, Mawngap Police, and local community members, who worked together throughout the four-day operation.
