NCB Zonal Office To Be Set Up In Shillong To Combat Drugs Menace

Shillong, Jul 30: The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the setting up of zonal offices of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Shillong and five other cities in the country.

Besides Shillong, the new NCB zonal offices will be established in Dimapur, Aizawl, Gangtok, Port Blair and Shimla.

This was informed by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai in a written  reply in the Rajya Sabha yesterday.

Currently, there are 30 zonal offices of the NCB in India. All of them are operational with requisite manpower, Rai said.

The minister also gave details of drug traffickers arrested and convicted across the country during the period from 2020 to 2024.

In Meghalaya, 150 drug traffickers were arrested in 2020 of which 34 were convicted by the court.

In 2021, 89 drug traffickers were arrested in Meghalaya of which 11 were convicted. In 2022, a total of 198 were arrested of which only 14 were convicted. In 2023, 370 were arrested and only 35 were convicted. In 2024, 156 were arrested and 62 were convicted.
