Shillong, Aug 13: The Meghalaya government has decided to establish a nursing college in the State under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Model.
The proposed nursing college will be set up at the erstwhile Step Down COVID Hospital at Umsawli in the New Shillong Township. It will have an intake capacity of 60 students for the BSc (Nursing) degree.
However, the proposed nursing college has been designed to provide courses for “overseas job placements”, meaning students who passed out will be given nursing jobs outside India.
Recently, the State Health and Family Welfare Department has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from eligible bidders to run and manage the proposed nursing college for a period of 33 years under the PPP Model. The tenure is extendable upon review of the performance of the successful bidder. The land, building and all assets will however remain the properties of the State government.

The bidder selected to operate the nursing college will have to design and implement vocational nursing programmes as per NSQF Levels 3 to 8, aligned with the Healthcare Sector Skill Council (HSSC) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) standards, “ensuring global employability and transferability of skills”.
The proposed nursing college will also have to ensure mandatory minimum of 90 per cent of annual graduates securing overseas jobs through verified partnership.

The firm that secured the contract to operate the nursing college will also have to obtain affiliation with the Indian Nursing Council and Meghalaya Nursing Council within the commencement of the first batch.
10 per cent of the total annual seats will be allocated as fee-waived scholarships for eligible students from Meghalaya.
