Khliehriat, August 14: The annual Seiñ Raij Sohkymphor Behdeiñkhlam festival concluded on last Tuesday at Madanshongniah Sohkymphor in East Jaintia Hills District, bringing together the community to celebrate and preserve the region’s rich cultural and traditional heritage.
The concluding-day celebration was attended by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as the chief guest, along with Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla, Dolloi of Elaka Jowai Puramon Kynjing, leaders of Seiñ Raij Sohkymphor and Seiñ Raij Tuber, headmen from various parts of East Jaintia Hills, villagers from nearby areas, children and elders, as well as district officials.
Around 10 “Rong and Rot” performances from two villages were among the major attractions of this year’s Behdeiñkhlam celebration.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the festival remained grand and vibrant despite the participation of fewer villages this year. He appreciated the presence of elders, children and members of the wider community, saying their collective participation reflected the strength of the tradition.
Recalling the festival atmosphere a decade ago, Dhar said there had been a noticeable change in the conduct of participants, with people now displaying greater respect and responsibility. He said that, unlike in the past when some people attended the festival after consuming alcohol, creating discomfort for women, no such incidents were witnessed this year.
Dhar also highlighted the participation of people from different faiths, including members of the Catholic and Presbyterian communities, describing the interfaith participation as a significant strength of the local culture. He said such participation promotes mutual respect and strengthens social harmony.
“As a leader, everyone is equal before me, and I am born to serve,” Dhar said.

The Deputy Chief Minister also announced a contribution of Rs.15 lakh for the development of Biar Aitnar and requested Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla to extend assistance in meeting the remaining requirements.
Kyrmen Shylla as the guest of honour praised Deputy Chief Minister Dhar for his initiatives and efforts across both districts of the Jaintia Hills.
Shylla pointed out that the annual festival continues to be held on a football ground and called for a dedicated site and proper infrastructure for Seiñ Raij Sohkymphor to host the Behdeiñkhlam festival.
He observed that several other Seiñ Raij sites have facilities and water features, but despite the absence of rain this year, the community successfully conducted the festival on the football ground. He said the lack of rain did not discourage the people, as their strong faith and commitment to their traditions ensured the successful celebration.

Shylla expressed hope that the Deputy Chief Minister’s support would contribute to the development of Biar Aitnar and assured the community of whatever assistance he could provide.
