East Khasi Hills Admin Reacts, Disallows KSU Demo At Khyndai Lad

Shillong, Aug 20: The Meghalaya government has disallowed the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) from holding a demonstration at Khyndai Lad in Shillong tomorrow.

In an order issued today, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Abhilash Baranwal said that that the proposed protest march from Jaïaw to Khyndai Lad including sit-in demonstration was not allowed as it “is likely  to result in disturbance of public peace.”

The East Khasi Hills district administration has been widely blamed for the violence that took place during the KSU bike rally in the city yesterday including the vandalism of several government  and private vehicles.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma spoke to his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma and briefed about the incidents that occured in Shillong yesterday including the attack on Assam-registered vehicles during the KSU bike rally.

Sangma in his post on X informed that designated ministers from both staes would meet “to explore ways to restore peace, trust and normalcy.”

It may be mentioned that at least two government vehicles were torched and nearly 30 others (both government and private) were damaged by masked protesters during the bike rally.

Many people have accused the State government of being “part of the problem” by not deploying police personnel to monitor the rallyists all along their routes in order to prevent lawless acts.
