Shillong, Aug 24: The Meghalaya Police has arrested one of the persons identified for involvement in the violence that took place during the black flag bike rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong on August 19.
Making a suo motu statement in the State Legislative Assembly today, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed the House that the arrested person is among the five masked individuals identified for acts of violence, vandalism on Assam-registered vehicles and assaults on pedestrians.
According to Sangma, the bike rally was permitted by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills after an undertaking by the KSU that the programme would be peaceful.
He said that 31 vehicles were damaged in the vandalism including eight Assam-registered vehicles.

“18 people were injured in the attack and they have been taken for medical treatment to Shillong Civil Hospital,” Sangma said.
He also informed that 15 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence and the president, vice president and general secretary of KSU were arrested on the same evening (August 19).
The chief minister said that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been constituted to identify and arrest all the culprits involved in the August 19 incident.
“On this front, I would like to assure the members of this House and the people of the State as a whole that the government has taken strong note of the incident that took place. The government will take all steps and leave no stone unturned to ensure that all the miscreants involved in the incident are brought to justice,” Sangma said.
