UDP Mawsynram MLA Confirms Talks with BJP, Says 8 MLAs Could Join if demands are fulfilled

Shillong, September 11: United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA from Mawsynram Constituency, Olan Sing Suin, has said that there could be a political shift in Meghalaya if the BJP-led Central Government fulfils the demands of the state.

Suin made the statement after the conclusion of an emergency meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the UDP held today at Shillong.

It may be recalled that reports had recently emerged that nine UDP MLAs were likely to join the BJP. However, on Friday, Suin openly acknowledged that discussions had taken place in Delhi, with the possibility of the eight UDP MLAs joining the BJP if the party agrees to fulfil the demands put forward by them.

The demands placed before the BJP by the eight UDP MLAs include the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, bringing amendments to the law concerning coal mining or allowing coal mining to resume, relocating the Harijan community from Them Iew Mawlong, exempting Meghalaya from the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), as well as other demands, including the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Speaking to the media, Suin confirmed that discussions had taken place with BJP leaders in Delhi involving the eight UDP MLAs. He said that time would tell when the eight MLAs would finally join the BJP.

“Politics can change even within a single day. One cannot say. If the BJP-led Government of India genuinely fulfils our demands, what is difficult about joining the BJP?” said Olan Sing Suin.
