Shillong, September 25: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and Amlarem MLA Lakmen Rymbui on Friday evening expressed his disappointment over criticism from some quarters regarding his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with some of his fellow MLAs from the United Democratic Party (UDP).
Speaking to the media, Rymbui said he was concerned that some respected elders, whom people hold in high regard and who have traditionally upheld religious and cultural values, had criticised or pointed fingers at their decision to join the BJP, suggesting that the move was motivated by reasons known only to them rather than by genuine concerns.
“I want to clarify a little on this. Our decision to join is for the sake of the problems facing by the State, the problems of our community and the development of the State,” he said.
He further appealed to people not to judge others on matters about which they do not know the truth. “I appeal, especially to religious leaders, to pray for us who have taken this step for the sake of the various issues facing by the people of the State, so that God may bless us and we may achieve the aspirations that are in the interest of our community,” he said.

Rymbui also clarified that party switching is not something that has happened only now, pointing out that similar developments took place in 2013 and 2018.
“Why should there be criticism this time when we too are Khasi? We have our own language, our own culture and our own faith. What is needed is for everyone to pray together so that we can overcome the challenges facing by our community in the State,” he said.
