Shillong, Sep 28: In yet another failure in the State higher education front, construction of three polytechnics in Meghalaya is yet to be completed even after 16 years that they were sanctioned.
This was revealed during review by the Assembly Committee on Estimates today regarding the status of polytechnics at Nongkrah (Ri-Bhoi District), Nongstoiñ (West Khasi Hills District) and Gasuapara (South Garo Hills District).
These three polytechnics were sanctioned in 2009 by the then Union Ministry of Human Resources Development.

Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Estimates, Mayralborn Syiem told media persons that funds have been released by the Centre to the State’s Education Department but the physical progress of these projects remain a concern.
Stating that the work for the polytechnics at Nongpoh and Nongstoiñ are almost completed, Syiem said, “After completion of the work, the PWD (Buildings) will hand over the buildings to the Education Department, which will then move for water supply, electricity connection and creation of posts. The matter has been taken up with the Planning and Finance departments.”

Syiem also said that the progress of construction of polytechnic at Gasuapara is very slow and only 64-65 per cent of civil work has been completed. According to him, the Education Department cited land-related hurdles in the initial stage as the main reason for the delay.
He also said that the Committee on Estimates has asked the Education Department to ensure that the project is expedited.
