Didn’t Pledge Support To Nonglait, Says Sutnga Catholic Church

Shillong, Oct 2: The Catholic Church of Sutnga Parish in East Jaiñtia Hills District has rejected claims that it had pledged support to Dr. D R L Nonglait, the NPP candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election from Shillong parliamentary seat.

A news report had been carried by an online news portal (not Meghalaya Post) stating that the Seng Rangbah Katholik of Sutnga Parish met Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on September 30 and offered its support to the candidature of Dr. Nonglait.

In a statement issued today, the Seng Rangbah Katholik of Holy Trinity Parish, Sutnga expressed shock at the content of the news report and clarified that its meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister had nothing to do with the Lok Sabha by-election from Shillong seat.

“The Seng Rangbah Katholik of Holy Trinity Parish, Sutnga did not meet the Deputy Chief Minister to offer support to Dr. Nonglait,” said a statement jointly signed by the president Emlang Pala, general secretary Merciful Sutnga and publicity secretary Dameriki Paslein.

“As leaders of the church, we work for the welfare of the church and as citizens of Meghalaya, we have every right to seek help from the Deputy Chief Minister of the State,” the statement added.

The church elders also urged the news portal to remove the news item from its page immediately so that people and church members are not misled.
