Youth Parliament at UCC Umbir Promotes Democratic Leadership and Responsible Citizenship

Nongpoh, October 6, 2026: A district-level Youth Parliament concluded at Union Christian College (UCC), Umbir, with the aim of encouraging young people to engage meaningfully with democratic processes, public policy and the responsibilities of citizenship.

Organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Union Christian College and funded by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the programme was held under the theme, “Empowering Youth for Democratic Leadership and Responsible Citizenship.” The event was also part of the college’s ongoing 75th Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The closing session was attended by Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun as the Chief Guest. Also present were Dr R. M. Manih, Principal of Union Christian College, faculty members, students and representatives from colleges across Ri Bhoi district.

The Youth Parliament brought together participants from nine colleges across Ri Bhoi, providing them with a platform to deliberate on democratic values, leadership, public policy and responsible citizenship.

The programme sought to strengthen students’ understanding of democratic institutions and processes while encouraging informed discussion, critical thinking and constructive participation.

Addressing the gathering, Sohtun highlighted the importance of leadership and encouraged students to understand that leadership is not limited to positions of authority. He emphasised that every individual can demonstrate leadership in their own way by contributing meaningfully to society and serving others.

He further urged students to pursue their chosen careers with a strong sense of responsibility and to consider how their knowledge, skills and professional expertise could be utilised for the betterment of society.

Prizes were also distributed to participants and winners in recognition of their performance and contributions during the Youth Parliament.

The programme provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of democratic institutions and processes while developing leadership qualities, critical thinking, public speaking skills and a stronger sense of social responsibility.
