Multipurpose indoor hall inaugurated, National Games agreement signed

Shillong, May 30: Meghalaya marked a defining moment in its sporting journey today with the inauguration of the Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Shillong and the signing of the Host State Agreement for the 39th National Games, Meghalaya 2027.

The Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall was inaugurated by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in the presence of Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P T Usha. Also in attendance were senior officials of IOA and Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA).

Built at a cost of Rs 132.9 crore, the Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall was completed in a record time of 2.5 years. It was funded by the New Development Bank (NDB) as part of the Externally Aided Project – Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project (MEIDP).

The hall is competition-ready to host Basketball and Kabaddi during the 39th National Games 2027. The facility will also be strengthened with a High Performance Sports Science Centre offering biomechanics, performance analytics, sports medicines, physiotherapy, nutrition, and sports psychology – ensuring that the State’s athletes have access to scientific world-class training support for years to come.

In the same ceremony, the Meghalaya government and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) signed the Host State Agreement for the 39th National Games, Meghalaya 2027. This made Meghalaya as the third state in the North East to host the National Games after Assam and Manipur.

The 39th National Games will be held across three cities – Shillong, Jowai and Tura. In all, more than 10,000 athletes from all over India are expected to compete in various disciplines.
