NONGPOH, OCTOBER 23: “Elect me as your MP so that I can go to Delhi not merely as the president of the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS), but as a representative empowered by the people to raise and fight for various issues concerning the Khasi community,” said NPP candidate Dr. DRL Nonglait while campaigning for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election at the Umsning playground on Thursday.

Seeking support from the people of Umsning Constituency and Ri Bhoi district, Nonglait said he would have limited ability to pursue community-related issues in Delhi if he went only as the KAS president. However, if elected and empowered by the people as their MP, he would be able to raise and advocate for several important issues concerning the community.

He said that, if elected as MP from the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency, his priorities would include continuing the demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, and opposing uranium mining in the state.

Nonglait added that several important issues required advocacy before the Central Government and that it would be easier for him to pursue matters concerning the Khasi community if elected to the Lok Sabha, particularly as the NPP also governs the state and has brought several changes to Meghalaya.

He further appealed to the people to stop criticising and blaming one another within the community, stating that the time had come for unity to fulfil the aspirations and address the needs of the Khasi people in the state.
