Heavy Rains Cause Havoc In South West Garo Hills, Roads Damaged

Shillong, Jul 9: Incessant monsoon rains in Meghalaya have caused havoc in South West Garo Hills District with road infrastructure damaged at several locations, affecting connectivity in some areas.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), road connectivity has been affected on the Silkona – Tikrikilla Road in the Mahendraganj area, the Lokaichar – Kalaipara Road, and the Garobadha – Dalu Road due to landslides and erosion caused by heavy rainfall.

Road damage has also been reported at Kotchu Adok village on the road connecting Purakhasia and Dalu. The road requires urgent restoration to prevent disruption to the movement of commuters and essential services.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed various parts of the State. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Sohra recorded rainfall of 224 mm yesterday.

Other areas where heavy rainfall was recorded include Mawkyrwat (245 mm), Williamnagar (201.2 mm), Mawsynram (195 mm) and Ratacherra (155 mm).

The IMD has predicted that  moderate rain is likely to occur at most places in the State tomorrow. It also warned that thunderstorm and heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places.
