No date yet for LS by-poll, Election Dept geared up

Shillong, May 12: Although nearly three months have passed since the demise of Lok Sabha MP from Shillong seat, Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon, the Election Commission is yet to announce the date for the by-election to fill the vacancy.

However, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer B D R Tiwari said that the State’s Election Department is prepared if the election date is announced by the poll panel. He also informed that normally the by-election should be held within six months.

“As per the mandate, the by-election is supposed to be held within six months of the demise of the sitting MP,” Tiwari told media persons today.

“We are fully prepared to conduct the by-election when the date is fixed by the Election Commission,” he added.

The by-election is neccessitated by the death of Dr. Syngkon of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) on February 19, 2026.

So far only two political parties have announced their candidates for the contest.

While VPP has decided to field Dr. Batskhem Myrboh, the ruling NPP has selected Dr. D Rockyer Lyngdoh Nonglait for the contest.

The Congress is likely to renominate former MP Vincent H. Pala as its candidate.

Other parties like UDP, BJP and HSPDP which are part of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) have not given any indications about their candidate.
