USTM Student Formulates Eco-Friendly Herbal Shampoo from Campus Flora

Nongpoh, July 25: Pure natural health products are once again gaining prominence and defining their presence in the world. To that end, Nayan Teron, an MSc 4th semester student from the Department of Botany at the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM), has successfully formulated and evaluated an herbal shampoo using indigenous plant species found within the university’s campus. The research was carried out under the expert guidance of Dr. Mautushi Das, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, USTM.

The project focused on harnessing traditionally used herbs known for promoting hair health. As part of the study, Nayan conducted a comprehensive survey of herbaceous plant diversity across various ecological zones within the USTM campus. Based on ethnobotanical insights and literature review, several herbs with reputed hair-nourishing and conditioning properties were selected.

These plants were then processed and formulated into a herbal shampoo using eco-friendly and scientifically validated methods. The final product underwent a series of rigorous physicochemical and performance-based evaluations, including, pH Determination, Solid Content Percentage Analysis, Foaming Index and Stability Tests, Foam Ability Assessment and Dirt Dispersion Test.

The results revealed that the shampoo had a well-balanced pH, excellent foaming capacity and stability, efficient cleansing properties, and notable effectiveness against hair fall and dandruff. These promising findings highlight its potential as a natural, sustainable alternative to commercial hair care products.

This research spotlights the therapeutic potential of local herbaceous plants and highlights the botanical wealth of the USTM campus. It reinforces the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya’s role as a vibrant hub of biodiversity and a source of eco-friendly innovations rooted in traditional knowledge and scientific inquiry.
