NONGPOH, NOV 6: Farmers in Mawbri village have reported significantly higher rice yields through the introduction of the RBP Model, a new cultivation method promoted by the Bhoirymbong C&RD Block under the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society.

The new method, based on natural farming practices, reduces the need for chemical pesticides and relies on naturally prepared fertilisers, making rice cultivation more beneficial while promoting safer food production.

The benefits were demonstrated on Friday by the Saindur Biang Village Organisation (VO), Mawbri, through a comparative harvesting exercise. From plots of equal size, rice cultivated using the RBP Model yielded 14 kg, compared to just 6 kg from the conventional farming method.

The demonstration was conducted at the paddy field of Khlainbor Jalong in Mawbri in the presence of farmers and officials, including Bhoirymbong Block Project Manager Mikesparson Sylliang, Project Executive Embhah Shadap, MCRP Ailinrity Syngkli and Mawbri village headman GH Kharsamai.

The Saindur Biang VO has also established an NPM Shop, which sells naturally prepared fertilisers and other agricultural inputs. MCRP Ailinrity Syngkli is leading the initiative and overseeing the implementation of the new rice cultivation method.

Farmers, including Khlainbor Jalong, who has been practising the RBP Model for the past three years, expressed satisfaction with the results, confirming that the method has doubled their rice production compared to conventional cultivation.
