Nongpoh, May 20: Leaders of the FKJGP Baridua Circle on Tuesday met the Syiem of Raid Marwet and submitted a memorandum urging him to direct all villages under the Raid to use traditional Khasi Ryndia shawls instead of Assamese gamosas during official functions and public programmes.
The organisation stated that the demand was raised after observing that many villages and schools under Raid Marwet often use Assamese gamosas to honour guests during various programmes, while traditional Khasi Ryndia is rarely used.
Following the submission of the memorandum, FKJGP Baridua Circle President Denis Nongrum and General Secretary Allen D. Sohpdang told reporters that the organisation strongly urged the Syiem to instruct all village authorities to preserve and promote Khasi identity and culture by adopting Khasi Ryndia in official events.
They pointed out that Raid Marwet shares a close boundary with Assam, making it important to safeguard and promote Khasi traditions and cultural identity so that other communities can recognise the traditional attire of the Khasi people.
The organisation further appealed to the Syiem of Raid Marwet to ensure that all villages and schools under the Raid use Khasi Ryndia during programmes and ceremonial functions in place of Assamese gamosas in the future.
