Shillong, October 15: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Shillong Ropeway Project has decided to proceed with its planned public rally on October 17 this month to oppose the Shillong Ropeway Project.
The decision was taken following a meeting convened by Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Government’s Tourism Department, R.M. Kurbah, attended by senior officials from various departments and representatives of the Joint Action Committee Against the Shillong Ropeway Project.
Speaking to the media, JAC Secretary Dr. Linda Marbaniang said that although the state government had invited the committee for discussions, the JAC had not withdrawn its plan to hold the public rally on October 17, as it wanted the government to cancel the Shillong Ropeway Project altogether.
Dr. Linda said the JAC had planned to organise the rally from Laban Last Stop to the site where work on the Shillong Ropeway Project is being carried out to demonstrate its opposition to the project.
Also watch:
“The Shillong Ropeway Project has damaged Shillong Peak through indiscriminate tree felling, which will affect water sources. We do not want the Shillong Ropeway Project; we want rainfall, and we want to preserve our water sources,” Dr. Linda said.
