Shillong, Aug 21: The Meghalaya government has advised passengers travelling towards Guwahati for health-related issues, airport, railway and other essential emergencies to avoid going through the Byrnihat-Jorabat road as it is presently blocked on both sides.
In a public advisory issued today, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, Abhishek Saini announced alternative routes for people from Meghalaya going to or coming from Guwahati.
The advisory urged citizens travelling towards Guwahati to either take the Byrnihat – Pillingkata- Kiling route or to take the Nongpoh – Patharkhmah – Rani route.
Travellers coming from Guwahati towards Shillong have been advised to either take the Basistha – Pillingkata – Kiling route or the Rani – Patharkhmah – Mairang route.
“All concerned are requested to avoid the Jorabat – Byrnihat road from both the Assam and Meghalaya sides and used the mentioned alternative routes,” the advisory said.
It may be mentioned that groups from Assam have blocked the National Highway connecting Meghalaya and Assam at Jorabat since yesterday in protest against the unprovoked attack on Assam-registered vehicles in Shillong on August 19 during the bike rally undertaken by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
The blockade has affected students from Meghalaya studying in Assam as also patients needing medical treatment or check ups in Guwahati and those catching flight or train journey from Guwahati.
